Botox & Fillers
Instant Age Defying Rejuvenation
Dermal fillers are considered treatment of choice from the cheek bones down. In the lower face, asymmetries and volume loss are a result of: gravitational pull, hormonal changes, photo damage and smoking. Dermal fillers, whether temporary or semi-permanent provide an instant and immediate correction.
Botulinum Toxin Type A
What is it?
Botox…. officially known as Botulinum Toxin Type A (BTXA) is a purified protein derived from the bacteria clostridium botulinum and was originally identified in the 1895.
There are 3 different Botulinum Toxin Type A products currently on the market, manufactured by different companies.
BOTOX (technically known as Onabotulinum Toxin Type A) is manufactured by Allergan, Xeomin (technically known as IncoBotulinum Toxin A is manufactured by Merz) and Dysport (technically known as Abobotulinum toxin A, is manufactured by Valeant) and are all derived from the same bacteria.
Different manufacturing processes mean subtle differences within the products and none of the products are interchangeable with relation to dosing. However, all the products have the same mechanism of action- that is, they block a chemical your muscles need to contract – without that chemical they cannot contract and they relax. The effect is temporary and generally expected to last 3-4 months. Your body is not permanently changed by having a treatment – after 3-4 months, your muscles will move again and it will not look worse than before you had treatment. BTXA preparation therefore are best utilized on dynamic muscle movements.
Types of Treatments
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
- Forehead lines
- Brow lift
We also treat areas in the lower face such as:
- Peri oral line
- Corners of the mouth
In addition, Botulinum Toxin Type A can be used to treat excessive sweating – especially in the underarm (axilla) …and these treatments can last up to 10 months.
Just as BTX-A treatments are considered the treatment of choice for the upper face, dermal fillers are considered treatment of choice from the cheek bones down. In the lower face, asymmetries and volume loss are a result of gravitational pull, hormonal changes, photo damage and smoking.
Dermal fillers, whether temporary or semi-permanent provide an instant and immediate correction. The amount of filler required is dependent on your individual characteristics and the look you are trying to achieve. Keep in mind that not all fillers are appropriate for all areas of your face.
Temporary Dermal Fillers (Hyaluronic Acid Fillers)
These fillers are typically made of stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in soft connective tissue and skin it is what gives it form. These products produced from bacteria in a lab have been stabilized to last longer in your body. Hyaluronic acid attracts 1000x its weight in water and therefore adds volume and fullness to your skin.
As we age, we do not produce as much Hyaluronic Acid, collagen and elastin in our skin and our face is subject to deflation, volume loss and descent.
Dermal fillers are broken down over time by muscle activity and an enzyme (hyaluronidase) naturally found in the human body. The length of time a filler lasts depends on both the filler and the area it is injected into and the specific individual.
In general, fillers last about 6 months in the lips, 9 months in the cheeks and perhaps a year or more in the tear troughs.
Just as there are different types of BTXA products, so are there many brands of Hyaluronic Acid fillers.
At APT we carry both the Juvederm Line and the Medicis Line of products. Manufactured differently and thus having slight different performance characteristics, they are both outstanding products with a volume of research supporting their safety and efficacy.
The Juvederm Products
- Juvederm Refine
- Juvederm Ultra
- Juvederm Ultra Plus
- Juvederm Voluma
- Juvederm Volvelles (especially for lips)
- Restyle Fine Lines
A thorough assessment will be made prior to the treatment to determine which filler is best for you given your area of concern, your skin tone and texture and the look you wish to create.
Special Instructions Prior to your treatment.
Before your treatment you will be asked to abstain from red wine, Advil (ibuprofen), Vitamin E and Aspirin for 3-4 days prior to treatment. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of bruising from your treatment. If you are prone to bruising, begin taking Arnica supplements. No other special instructions are required. Please contact our office for any concerns.
Longer Lasting (Semi Permanent Fillers)
Semi-permanent or better referred to as “longer lasting” fillers are made with a variety of materials other than Hyaluronic Acid (which typically represents a temporary filler). The longer lasting filler used by APT Medical Aesthetics is Radiesse™ – a product made of synthetically produced smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a gel carrier – basically calcium and phosphate molecules. These are also natural to your body but they take longer to be broken down and therefore the filler lasts longer than its’ Hyaluronic Acid counterparts. This longer lasting filler stimulates the production of your own natural collagen for long- lasting results – so the areas in which you are injected get better in terms of tone and texture over time after injection.
Radiesse™ has more “lifting” capacity than its Hyaluronic Acid counterparts (Juvederm, Perlane etc.) and thus is fantastic is areas of higher volume loss – typically cheeks. It also does a fantastic job in restructuring jawlines, adding chin volumes and is especially beneficial in filling temporal hollows.
The product is injected into the area of concern where volume has been lost. Results can be seen instantly although the best results usually are seen about a week after treatment. The filler has an anaesthetic component to it, so the treatment is quite comfortable.
